I'm thinking, though, for the sake of the story, that a strong point of conflict that would keep Mirth and her family from Winding and why Winding wouldn't come to the aide of Carentas would be because a). Mirth's mother does not like ANge's mother or b). Because Mirth's mother is insulted that Ange's mother would not marry Ange to one of her cousins. or C). The father's had something to do with it or d). The alliance with Genoya insulted Carentas..or e). Winding does not have the resources or alliances to help Carentas.
I think it would have to be a fued or some sort of impediment that does not allow the families to help eachother.....
Anyway, what are your thoughts and answers?
(From the tree it appears that Ange's father Rodier, was the eldest son. Is that right? I mean, the way I figure it happen was he ran away from home at age eighteen. So he must have abdicated the throne, only to end up in Winding, marrying a Princess and becoming a King anyway. -- OR is he the younger brother?)

ReplyDeleteI was seriously considering it this morning, and then about 1/2 hour ago I decided not to do it. 50,000 words is a lot, and it would mean I'd have to dedicate myself to it and coudln't work on Goosey as much.
Actually, the story I was going to write was Andy's. I have these ideas about reworking her earliest adventure into a novel.

They are cousins on their father's side. I'll link in the family tree again, since we're discussing it.
2). How often did they see eachother in their childhood?
I'd say - only four times. Their fathers would met each other maybe once a year, but it would be more difficult for Ange and Mirth to travel all the way to Carentas or Winding.
3). When did their father's die?
Hmm, I don't have a quick answer to this one. I think Ange's father died when she was ten, so if she is 15 now, five years ago.
4). How did their father's die?
Ange's father drowned, Winding's relies on trade, the kingdom borders the Trade River (Which I imagine is huge, like Mississippi) and there was a storm and it was an accident that he fell overboard. They recovered his body, but too late.
5). Do their mother's get along?
yes and no. I'd say they aren't especially close, but they aren't enemies. They don't hate each other.
6). Do Mirth's brother's and Ange get along?
Ange follows Mirth's example - they are stupid stupid boys. Stay away from them. She would never agree to marry them. Mirth was right.
7). Does Mirth get along with Ange's brother?
--I'm not sure he exists yet, but if he did, I'd imagine Mirth might have one of those childhood crushes on him, the kind she'd forget about, or one she'd never ever admit. I suppose I may have to put him in a letter, so you'd know what I'm talking about.
8). How does Mirth feel about Winding-- has she ever been there?
Mirth has been to Winding at twice.
9). HOw does Ange feel about Carentas-- has she ever been there?
Ange has been to Carentas only twice. She hated the long long time it took to travel to Carentas, but she loved dressing up in pretty clothes and eating sweets with Mirth.
10). Favorite childhood memory together?
Ange's favorite memory is eating apples in the Carentas stables, sitting in a huge pile of hay, crunch, munch. yummy.
11). Worst childhood memory together?
Is there such a thing? Prehaps having to stand for hours during some royal ceremony, and getting blisters, because their shoes were so small.
12) The Wisps? When did Mirth first find out about Ange's wisps?
Mirth found out about the wisps during her last visit to Winding. - its a charming little story, would you like me to write it and post it sometime?
13). What big event led them not to see each other again?
When their fathers died. Winding has always been a relatively poor kingdom, but after the King died, Ange's mother has struggled to keep her power, green noble families and keep the kingdom from falling into utter ruin, as well as raise her children, and secure their futures.
14). How far is Winding from Carentas?
Days, weeks away. A Winding Runner can get their in three weeks, but that's because he runs very very fast. (or else has a fast horse) Or should it be farther? I have a map. Should I try to scan it and post it? It don't know if the map is to scale though.

Winding just doesn't have the resources, and also because the mother's aren't fond of each.
(- OH, did Mirth's mother want Ange to marry one of her sons? Ewww- no wonder Ange's mother doesn't like Mirth's mother.)
There is really no reason for Winding's Queen to put her kingdom in danger because the Queen of Carentas couldn't manage her kingdom. Really.
Doing that would just drag both kingdoms down and as Queen Ianthia wouldn't ever let that happen.

I was thinking -- it has to be more like Six times.
Mirth visited Winding the first two times with her father.
The Third time she went to Winding was to attend Ange's father's funeral. This was with her family. Mirth's mother, I think, tries to offer one of the sons in marriage to Ange's mother. I think this is the point of no return for the two women.
The Third time Ange visits Winding ( and I think this is the last time they see eachother) if for the funeral as well ( unless you think that they probably couldn't make it but, that would be...sorta rude.....)

I think Mirth's father's death is recent...no more than three years ago.
4). How did their father's die?
I can't remember. I think though, it was sudden and shocking. I'm pretty sure he was a robust man of a jolly and exuberant nature. he probably was somewhat reckless-- a hunting accident or whatnot. I think, though, Queen Anne found him. this accounts for her being unhinged and, probably leads to her less than practical methods of ruling a country.
5). Do their mother's get along?
I agree with your answer. I'm pretty sure they disagree on parenting methods and ruling methods.

Mirth has been I think ( three times) Two with her father only and the third with her family. She thought Winding was plain at first, but Ange won her over with her honesty, warmth, and friendliness. I think Ange was the first very sincere person Mirth had ever met. And Mirth truly loves Ange.

I think they have a hiding place in Winding where they used to escape from courtly duties and boring Princess lessons. I believe their parents thought of the four visits as kind of a cutlural exchange-- where they learned about other kingdoms for ...oh four months.

The Funeral at Winding. Horrid. Mirth looks terrible in black....

Answered. --- I think the distance, though, also accounts for the fact that, the times they did see eachother, they probably spent a vast amount of time together. A month or more....
Also-- I love Queen Ianthia. She's strong and practical! Not like Mirth's mother.
