Devastated by the news of her betrothal, Princess Angevine writes to her cousin, Princess Mirth to tell her the bad news. However, Mirth's response is anything but consolable because she has just been kicked out of her kingdom after her brothers lose it in a stupid bet! Both girls now face exile to distant, unfamiliar lands.
While Mirth must deal with goblins and her stupid lovesick brothers, she finds some help in a mysterious Stranger, who gives her a cottage near the village of Glaukos. For a former Princess Mirth manages somehow to live as a peasant by selling wood carvings, until she meets the mayor's son, Regamire, and suddenly finds herself in more suitable arrangements. She writes to her cousin, when she can find paper, to tell her troubles and her good luck in becoming Regamire's friend.
Ange still worries about her cousin, but is relieved that Mirth has found some friendship. Ange's only friend is her handmaiden Rheamina, who accompanies her north to her new home in the kingdom of Geyona. Ange relies on Rhea even more when she learn about a plot to assassinate her, and to thwart it the girls trade places. That's how Ange ends up becoming a goose girl, and Rheamina marries the Prince! Now Ange must keep her identity a secret or her only friend will be killed.
Mirth soon ends up in a confusing predicament of her own, when Regamire proposes to her at the Harvest Moon Ball. She thinks she is happy about it, but time will tell.
